All I really wanted was to be home.
The rain and wind was especially strong tonight and the invasion of people from office to street was just starting to reach its peak. Everyone wanted to be warm and dry. I walked with purpose to the tram stop at the bottom of the street. Reaching for my wallet to have my tram ticket ready I was knocked to my feet by a hurried stranger and I landed hard on the pavement outside a small side street. As I slowly picked myself up I peeked down the usually deserted alley. Situated perfectly in the centre of the road was what looked oddly like a small Gypsy caravan. What on earth was it doing there? My immediate thought was that it was a film or TV commercial but I couldn’t see anyone else around. I decided to investigate, besides, the warm glow from the open door seemed so inviting, beckoning me in form the cold. As I walked a little closer I could see a small figure sitting under a glowing lamp, brightly coloured smoke swirling around her body and up through open window high on the caravan wall. Her head lifted and I could see a peculiar face with piercing blue eyes and radiant smile. Her hand waved to beckon me inside the caravan. By now the rain was coming down hard and I felt the decision to enter was already made. I would miss my tram but I guess I’d just wait for another. She smiled warmly at me as I entered through the small door and reached out my hand to introduce myself. She placed her small, warm hand inside mine and in a dry, croaky voice she spoke to me. “Hello Michael” I have been waiting a long time, where have you been?” My heart sank. I didn’t think they would send someone like her to find me. How stupid could I be? Then darkness quickly overtook me. The tram ride home was the last thought that passed through my head.
